A study project set up by CEN and CENELEC to define the key problems faced by SMEs in influencing,accessing and adopting European standards, and to recommend practical solutions at each step in the process. The final report describes:

Barriers for SMEs to benefit from standards:

awareness of standards;
awareness of the importance of standards for the SME’s own company;
tracing standards;
obtaining standards;
understanding standards;
implementing standards;
evaluating the implementation of standards.

Barriers for SMEs to benefit from involvement in standardization:

awareness of the process of standardization;
awareness of the importance of involvement in standardization for the SME’s own company;
tracing standardization projects;
becoming involved;
being involved effectively;
evaluation.
